MSW disposal plants
The disposal facilities, designed and built by Deco S.p.A., represent the ultimate destination of Municipal Solid Waste
As a matter of fact, after sorting the waste through Separate Waste Collection, its so-called residual waste fraction is subsequently treated at the Deco S.p.A. MBT plant, whereby the waste is further reduced.
Both landfills, in accordance with the EC Directive 1999/31 transposed in Italy by Legislative Decree 36/2003, were built by adopting all the technical requirements necessary to safeguard the involved environmental compartments (water, air, soil and subsoil).
They are built on a very low and extremely permeable natural geological barrier, consisting of a few- hundred-metre thick clay layer (natural component), on both the bottom and the embankments supplemented with synthetic 2 mm thick HDPE tarpaulins (artificial component ) and with the leachate drainage system (built-in component).
The landfills are also equipped with an leachate extraction, transport and storing system, with a biogas capture and recovery facility with electricity and heat production, with a rainwater collection and pre-treatment network as well as with ancillary works such as offices and facilities, weighing plant, weather station, fuel storage depots etc.
A further element that countersigns the landfills concerns the environmental restoration of the site, with the objective of obtaining an area consistent with the designated use, to be performed through reconstruction not only of the natural profile of the area, but also of the final greenery surface coverage with herbaceous essences, typical of the intervention area – Colle Cese landfill is a prime example of this.
